Handyman vs. Contractor: What's the Difference?

Handyman and contractor are often used interchangeably, but they describe different scopes of work. Understanding the difference helps you hire the right person for the job — and avoid overpaying for a small repair or underestimating a big remodel.
A handyman focuses on repairs, maintenance, and small improvements that don't require permits or licensed trades. Think door adjustments, trim repairs, drywall patches, fixture installation, shelving, assembly, and the small punch-list items that accumulate in every home. The work is skilled but generally non-structural and non-permitted.
A general contractor manages larger projects — kitchen and bath remodels, layout changes, additions, and any build that coordinates multiple trades over an extended timeline. A GC owns the schedule, pulls permits, schedules inspections, sources materials, and coordinates the plumbers, electricians, and other specialists who do the licensed work.
The line between them isn't about skill — it's about scope and responsibility. A handyman replacing a bathroom vanity is doing finish work. A contractor remodeling that same bathroom is responsible for the waterproofing, the plumbing rough-in, the permits, and the inspection. Same room, very different level of oversight.
Cost structure differs too. Handyman work is usually billed by the hour or by the job, with a relatively quick turnaround. Contractor projects are quoted as a fixed estimate with a longer timeline, because they involve materials with lead times, trade scheduling, and inspections. A small drywall patch billed at contractor rates would feel overpriced; a full bathroom remodel handled as handyman work would be a red flag.
When to hire a handyman: a single repair or a list of small repairs, an installation, maintenance, or a small improvement that doesn't move plumbing, electrical, or structure. When to hire a contractor: a remodel, a layout change, an addition, or any project that requires permits and trade coordination.
The cleanest setup is a company that does both. You describe what you need, you get an honest scope check, and the work routes to the right level of oversight. A loose door goes to the handyman. A gut renovation goes to the contractor. And when a handyman visit uncovers a bigger issue, the same team can scale up without you starting over with a new company.
